Kindergarten Sports Study

Dear Families,

We have noticed that the children are interested in exploring different kinds of sports.

They’re curious about where people play sports, what the rules are, what equipment to use, and how people learn to play sports. In addition to the numerous physical benefits, participating in sports helps children build self-esteem, gain confidence in their abilities, and interact positively with peers and adults. We believe that a study of sports will give the children opportunities to burn some energy, increase their physical fitness, practice important motor skills, learn how to work with others as a team to achieve a common goal, and discover a love of healthy activity that will last a lifetime.

We need your help to gather sports-related materials that the children can explore, such as balls, special equipment, uniforms, and awards. If you have books or pictures related to sports, we would love to borrow those, too. Below is a list of suggested items, but feel free to send any sports-related items that you think may add to our exploration. Please label materials with your name so we can return them to you at the end of our study. We promise to take good care of them! Also, if you or someone you know plays a sport or has a job related to sports and would like to visit our class, please let us know.

As we study sports, we will learn concepts and skills related to physical development, literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. We’ll also develop thinking skills as we observe, investigate, ask questions, solve problems, make predictions, and test our ideas.

What You Can Do at Home

Visit a playing field, gymnasium, or recreation center in your community. Talk with your child about the sports that are played there. Encourage your child to tell you what he notices. Talk about the different types of equipment the players use, the skills they need to participate, and the rules they must follow.

While watching sports in person or on TV or the internet, talk with your child about what is happening. Together, count how many players are on the field or court. Point out the score of the game and encourage your child to compare the numbers to determine which team is winning. Ask questions about the players’ uniforms and equipment. Teach your child about a sport she wants to learn about. If the sport is unfamiliar to you, take this opportunity to research and learn about it together.

Thank you for playing an important role in our learning!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Warren’s Kindergarten
